Solutions to Possible Issues when using Windows Vista or Windows 7

  • Error 3027: Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.
  • Error 3073: Operation must use an updateable query.
  • Can't delete ...ctapp2010.mde after compacting it...
  • After installing program updates, ChurchTrac reverts back to an older version

If you're using ChurchTrac on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you may encounter the errors mentioned above, and possible other errors as well.

For a technical description of the problem, continue reading this paragraph, otherwise skip to the next section below. These errors and issues are caused when ChurchTrac does not have the necessary rights within Windows to perform write and modify operations. When User Account Control (UAC) is turned on and when User-level write permission for the ProgramData folder has been blocked, ChurchTrac is unable to write data to this location, resulting in the errors above. These problems typically do not occur on computers where UAC is turned off. Changing the User permissions for the ChurchTrac folder should resolve the issue entirely.

Resolving the Problem

1. First, close any open programs, including ChurchTrac. Click on your Windows Start menu, type %programdata% in the search box then press Enter. This will open a new window that contains multiple folders.

2. Find the ChurchTrac folder. Right-click on the ChurchTrac folder and choose Properties. This will open a new window called ChurchTrac Properties with several tabs. Click on the Security tab:

3. Click the Edit button. This will open a new window called Permissions for ChurchTrac (see below).

  • In the box labeled "Group or user names", click Users

  • In the box below that labeled "Permissions for Users", be sure the box is checked under Allow next to Full Control. (When you check the Full control box, the Modify and Write boxes will also become checked).

4. Click OK to close this window, then Click OK again and close any remaining open windows.

5. Open ChurchTrac and install any available program updates. You can check for program updates by going to the Utilities menu and clicking on "Check online for program updates".

Tips for Installing Program Updates

When installing a program update, it is recommended that you choose the "Save" option when downloading the update file and save it to your Desktop or to another location where it is easily accessible.

Once the file has finished downloading, Right-Click on the file and choose "Run as Administrator". This ensures that the updater has sufficient privileges to run and make the necessary modifications in Windows.

After installing the latest program update, close and reopen ChurchTrac, then go to the Utilities menu and click "Check online for program updates" again. If ChurchTrac still shows that a program update is available, be sure to follow the instructions at the top of this article to ensure that the ProgramData folder has the correct User permissions set. If you're still having trouble with this, please contact technical support.
