By now, you’re all too familiar with how COVID-19 has forced churches and communities to rethink gatherings and activities of all kinds. Many ministries have already begun making headway on plans for Halloween and are trying to juggle big aspirations with the desire for safety.
Regardless, even though your congregation has already been working hard on your Halloween or Trunk-or-Treat celebrations, some churches may still want to make plans for a safer way to celebrate for the sake of encouraging more people in your area to join in. Just knowing your church is taking safety into consideration may convince some folks on the fence that attending your festivities is viable for them.
Since you are looking for ways to preserve the opportunity for ministry and evangelism that Halloween offers, here are some fun ideas that may do exactly what you’re looking for.
Set 6ft apart, have the participants carve inspiring images, then place a candle inside to remind them of Christ’s light shining to all the world. Don't want to carve? Use smaller pumpkins and decorate them with paint and glitter. It's equally as messy... but it does avoid the need for sharp knives.
Create scavenger hunt cards to hand out to kids filled with Halloween-themed things to look for as they walk through their neighborhoods. This way, they can be involved and present in their neighborhood without needing to go door-to-door.
Instead of handing candy out of a single bowl or bag, consider having your members assemble goodie bags that can be arranged on a table or at the end of the driveway, allowing everyone to more easily maintain distance. These bags can include healthier homemade alternatives to candy, gospel tracts, or cards inviting recipients to your church!
An outdoor movie night where people can be seated 6ft apart. Show a movie with a positive message, hand out plenty of snacks, and really let your church’s hospitality shine!
Throw a safely distanced picnic where boxed dinners are auctioned and the money goes to fund one of your church’s important ministries or a local cause. Funds get raised and stomaches get filled. It's a win-win.
COVID has brought its challenges, but we know you and your team are up to the task. At ChurchTrac, our prayer is that your team can continue to love your people and your community and share the Gospel. Hopefully, these activity ideas can be the final touch on your plans to do just that!
