You probably knew that ChurchTrac has built-in Age Categories. Did you know that you can edit and auto-assign them as well?
What are Age Categories?
Age Categories are selection fields built into ChurchTrac that give you an easy way to organize groups of people by their age. You can have as many (or as little) as you'd like. Upon adding a birthdate for a person, they are auto-assigned to an age category.
Changing Age Category Fields
Since every ministry is unique, ChurchTrac gives you the ability to create your own Age Category fields. To do this, edit a person and select the Age Category link.
Upon selecting the Age Category link, a dropout menu will appear. This gives you the ability to edit the Title, Ages, and even add a new list option. You can also move age categories around by using the arrows to the right. If you wish to delete an Age Category, select the trash can icon.
Auto-Assign Age Categories
Because many ministries graduate children from one group to another at specific times in the year, a person's Age Category will not be updated until you decide to Auto-Assign. Upon selecting the "Auto-Assign" button, ChurchTrac will automatically assign each persons Age Category based on their birthdate.
Tags vs Age Categories
Though Tags are best for organizing your people as opposed to fields, Age categories are best for organizing Children's Ministry classes. This is because they are most often based on age. Since you can choose when to Auto-Assign Age Categories to all your children, this makes using Age Categories a no-brainer for all this.
When it comes to creating classes or discipleship groups that are not based upon age...Tags will be the way to go. You can learn more about them HERE.
