One of my favorite things about going to my church is that I know the moment I walk in, I will be in a sea of smiling faces. I will be surrounded by people who legitimately care about me and my well being. No matter what the world is trying to throw at me in its attempt to break my spirit, the encouragement from God’s people overcomes any sense of self-doubt or anguish that I may be feeling.
Though they shall not be named, I can tell you that I have personally visited a multitude of churches in my lifetime that I would say are dead. They showed no prospect of growth, have no impact in their community and have no plans of being the hands and feet of Christ. In many of the cases, I felt like I was attending a funeral service rather than a Sunday morning worship service. Each one of these churches had one singular thing in common: the majority of their congregation didn’t smile.
Now I’m not saying that when we’re at church we should be putting on a “church face” with a fake smile. You can spot those people from a mile away! But think about this: when you go to church, you are in a place with other believers who are coming together to worship a Holy God, who loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die for the sins of man. You are coming together to sing about His love. You are poised to hear a pastor speak about God’s promises. The love and promises of God through His Word are a BIG deal. Without them…this thing we call faith is nothing more than a pipe dream waiting to get flushed away.
What if I’m having a hard time smiling?
Smiling seems unrealistic when life comes at us fast. It’s hard to smile when you’ve lost a loved one. It’s hard to smile when you find out your mother has stage 3 cancer. It’s hard to smile when you are hit with an unexpected bill that you can’t pay. But…God gives us His promises.
For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. -Psalm 61:3
The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace. -Exodus 14:14
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. -John14:13
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. -Matthew 6:33
At ChurchTrac we are passionate about creating some of the best church management software tools around. We want to do everything we can to make easy-to-use church software you can actually afford. That being said, we recognize that these tools are secondary to the Word of God and the Love of Jesus. The more we examine the Word of God, the more we see and remember His promises. This gives us hope and recharges our spiritual batteries. His promises are rooted in an unfailing Love that can never fade away.
That is something to smile about!
